Stratigraphic formation

A formation is a unit of stratigraphy. It refers to a set of sedimentary layers which are somehow distinct from those above and below them in the stratigraphic sequence. This may be because they have a different lithology, different sedimentary structures, or different fossil assemblages, or something else entirely..

The Casselman Formation mapped sedimentary bedrock unit in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia, of Pennsylvanian age. It is the uppermost of two formations in the Conemaugh Group, the lower being the Glenshaw Formation. The boundary between these two units is the top of the marine Ames Limestone. The Conemaugh Group overlies the Upper Freeport coal bed of the Allegheny Formation and ...Image 1: Stratigraphy. Geologists use stratigraphic columns such as this one to show when the layers of sediment were deposited. This stratigraphic column is for North Dakota and shows only the formations that can be viewed from the surface. This column will change a little in the future as geologists learn more about the foundations of North ...A formation is a series of sedimentary beds distinct from other beds above and below and is thick enough to be shown on geological maps. Sometimes several formations are lumped together to form a group. If you want to propose a new formation or group, there are strict guidelines set up by the International Commission of Stratigraphy.

These formations provide a physically correlative stratigraphic separation between the lower and upper formations of the Dakota Group in Colorado, and between the Cheyenne Sandstone and Dakota Formation in Kansas. The Cheyenne Sandstone was first described by Cragin (1889) in south-central Kansas.Florida geologic strata are divided into formations. Formations are the basic rock units used in stratigraphy, the branch of geology that deals with the layers of sedimentary rock that have accumulated over geologic time. A stratigraphic column is a representation used in geology and its subfield of stratigraphy to describe the vertical location of rock units in a particular area. A typical stratigraphic column shows a sequence of sedimentary rocks, with the oldest rocks on the bottom and the youngest on top. In areas that are more geologically complex, such as ...Sequence stratigraphy of the Dariyan Formation in the Zana Mountain. One interpretation for Smackover deposition suggests the dominantly carbonate formation is the result of a continuous marine transgression caused by a eustatic rise in sea level (Benson, 1988).
